Backcountry.com Community Profile Pages
Previous Profile Pages
Community profile pages was one of the first efforts I worked on at Backcountry.com. This project was a particularly tough since the profile pages were great to begin with. I was tasked with cleaning up the page, adding information about the votes the person had received on their content and creating some additional visual interest. The goal of the project was to increase the number of profiles created by giving users a more compelling profile experience and in turn, encourage them to use their real name which adds tremendous credibility to the community.
Updated Profile Pages
The updated profile pages were a huge win. Among the improvements were the addition of helpful vote counts to the top greeting card section, an improved layout of the silo rankings (seen here), the addition of product images to the content and the added ability to edit and delete content directly from this page (so the user wouldn’t have to go looking for it).
Results of this project
Overall the effects of the changes (along with help from some other efforts) resulted in a 2x positive change in the number of profiles using Real Name as well as significant growth in the number of profiles created.
Percent of profiles using Real Name prior to launch (March 2009): 4.31%
Percent of profiles using Real Name after 1 year: 8.62%
New Profiles Created Since Launch: 53,032
